AVID

At Harns Marsh Middle School, we offer a unique AVID program. As an AVID school each student is required to have a planner, an organized binder, write Cornell Notes, participate in Socratic Seminars, learn to work together through the 7 Habits program, and attend a tutorial period through our Harns Marsh Intervention Period. Students may apply to enter the AVID Elective. The AVID Elective holds students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge. Although AVID serves all students, the AVID elective focuses on the least served students in the academic middle. The formula is simple - raise expectations of students and, with the AVID support system in place, they will rise to the challenge. What distinguishes AVID from other educational reform programs is its continuous success rate.

Of the 33,204 AVID seniors in 2012 who reported their demographics, academic achievement data and future plans, just over 98 percent indicated they would be graduating from high school, with 90 percent planning to attend a postsecondary institution: 58 percent to a four-year college and 32 percent to a two-year institution. Seventy-three percent reported taking at least one rigorous course, such as AP®, IB® or Cambridge®, with 61 percent taking the corresponding exam.

Additionally, Hispanic/Latino and African American/Black AVID students take AP tests at rates that exceed their peers (AVID Hispanic/Latino - 57 percent, U.S. overall Hispanic/Latino - 14 percent; AVID African American/Black -14 percent, U.S. overall African American/Black - 8 percent).

School Stakeholders and School Administrators now consider AVID an essential strategy for closing the achievement gap and making the college dream accessible to all students.

The AVID 11 Essentials Consist of:

  1. Student Selection- students must meet the requirements set by the school as seen in the brochure.
  2. Participation- This is Advancement Via Individual Determination. The students have to Individually want to Advance for the better.
  3. AVID Elective & College Promotion- This is the students that qualify for the full AVID program as seen in the brochure. This is to prepare students for a brighter future and give them the tools to succeed in any high school or college program. Our AVID class is the host of College week here at HMMS to encourage students to pick the best High School program for them at the end of Middle School.
  4. Enrollment in Rigorous Curriculum- At Harns Marsh Middle School we have a variety of courses set up.
  5. Writing Curriculum- Students participate in Teenbiz, Marsh Writes, Graphic Organizers, Re-writes, Peer-Editing, & Peer-Conferencing about their writing.
  6. Inquiry Emphasis- Students use the AVID style marking the text to aid them in the inquiry process. Teamed with AVID marking the text students get to experience innovative text, Socratic Seminars, debates, and other interactive lessons to promote inquiry.
  7. Collaboration- this is between teachers to teachers, teachers to students, students to students, & last but not least, teacher to parent.
  8. Trained Tutors & Tutorial Time- Our intervention goal is that with Targeted Instruction + Time = Learning! This is a built-in time of the day where students are assigned to a study hall, skill period, or an extension based on their grades, skills, and achievements within a class. Tutorial sessions can be used to re-teach essential standards, offer pyramid support, provide homework help, make-up assignments, conference with students, and offer enrichment and extra-curricular opportunities. Any and all students can and should be required to attend a specific tutorial session. Intervention Reminders, Tutorial Trackers, and Intervention Attendance Sheets will be used to hold students accountable.
  9. Data Collection and Analysis- Harns Mash Middle is highly dedicated to their data. We sit down each week to determine: Which of our students need additional time and support to achieve at or above proficiency on an essential learning? How will we provide that time and support? What is our plan to enrich and extend the learning for students who are highly proficient? What is an area where my students struggled? What is an area where our team’s students struggled?
  10. School Commitment- Our school has really focused on preparing students for a brighter future through the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens and the AVID program.
  11. Active Disciplinary Site Team- Talking as a school to help promote that Individual Determination.

The Key Essentials that we have chosen to focus on school-wide are:

  • Planners
  • Binders
  • Structured Note Taking
  • Intervention Period
  • Grade Awareness
  • Student Advocating For Themselves

The Key Essentials that we as a school have chosen to focus on in the Elective have been placed into a 3 day lesson rotation:

Day 1: Lesson day

  • The students will come prepared with a utensil and paper. The students will have their binders open to their AVID section of their binder BEFORE the lesson begins. The lessons will be AVID lessons, reading strategies, writing strategies, etc. The students will grab a "Help Ticket" for next class before they leave.

Day 2: Tutor day

  • The students will turn in their help ticket before they walk in the door. The students will be working toward A's & B's ONLY in each one of their classes. The students will be organized into groups that are based on their Help Tickets on what they need help on in their Core Classes. Tutors will be used as available. If the student needs to go to the Library next class the students will place their name on the sign-up sheet before they leave.

Day 3: Reading & AR goal day

  • The students will have a book or book project ready to go at the start of class. If the student does not have a book, they must sign-up on the library sign-up sheet before the class begins. The students will grab a reading square and begin reading. If the students have an A.R. Test that they need to take, they will quietly go to the computers at the back of their room by themselves with their book (unless advised to take the test in a teachers room).
